Ancestors. Finding A Sense Of Rewarding In Research
By Mack R Rodriguez of Rodinc
Ancestors. Finding A Sense Of Rewarding In Research. At one time or another during our lives we think about researching and finding about those members of our families so diluted back in time that we cannot even call them family anymore, we call them "our ancestors" Once this happens it never leaves us; basically is the same question men have been asking themselves forever just in a smaller scale... Where do we come from? Who are we? This is an adventure road in which I found myself about a year ago, motivated by an essay my younger daughter needed to present at school. It was a trip. May be the previous times I went down the same road, my motivation was only curiosity and produced mediocre results and not a single, worth mentioning, interesting character. As a family in both sides we descend from Spaniards and yes there were a couple of semi-aristocrats, some nomads, musicians, etc, none of them captured my attention for long. This time I decided to forget the usual documented approach and went straight to water board my elders. It was quite a surprise knowing the most distinguished of all my ancestors was just two generations ago. Grandpa himself. This was the reason I missed him before, it was too close, but somehow this same reason made me feel it a little more intensively. The stories were refreshing coming from the lips of those in my family relating them to me and my laptop carrying, constant tailing daughter. They were delighted to revive moments from their pasts through the spontaneity of an improvised tale telling gathering. I got to know from a man I never met, who was loved, admired, respected and feared. I got to feel the pride that comes with it, but amazingly my most rewarding feeling was seeing a different light in the eyes of the narrators, a spark of returned youth, like if they were reliving those moments by being forced to remember. The experience by itself proved fruitful for my daughter, who presented a well documented, verified piece of work. Emotional for me, which made me thirsty for more. I have now a renovated respect for all my ancestors (the closest ones win the palm) and I appreciated the moments we spent together; I know they did too.

It's nice to research and learn about our ancestors. A few years ago, I started researching mine and was happy to meet relatives I never knew existed.
